How the cost of a 3D print is calculated

The calculator starts with material: the grams in the part times the price per kilo. Then it adds electricity (power in kW times print hours times the price per kWh) and printer wear, which is what the printer cost spread over the hours you expect it to last.

Failed prints get paid for too. If one in ten fails, the material, power and wear of that lost part are spread across the good ones.

Detailed mode lets you add labor and extras. The sale price is the cost plus your margin, and tax goes on top at the end if you turn it on.

An example with numbers

A 120 g PLA part that takes 5 hours. Filament costs USD 20 per kilo, the printer draws 150 W, cost USD 600 and should last 5,000 hours, and power costs USD 0.20 per kWh.

  • Material: USD 2.40
  • Power: USD 0.15
  • Wear: USD 0.60
  • Total: USD 3.15. With a 10% failure rate, USD 3.50.
  • With a 50% margin, the price is USD 5.25 before tax.
